During his Google+ hangout Pres. Obama tells a woman that her husband shouldn't be unemployed from the growth he has seen in the economy. Obama said he finds it "interesting" because he is getting "the word" that someone in her husband's job field "should be able to find something right away."

Obama offered to do something if she would just send him her husband's resume.

The woman wants to know why Obama is extending visas for foreigners when there is tons of demand for American jobs by Americans.

"I don't know what your husband's speciality [is], but I can tell you that there is a huge demand around the country for engineers," Obama told the woman.

"I understand that," she responded. "But how am -- given the list that you're getting, I mean we're not getting that. You said in the State of the Union address for business leaders to ask what can they do to bring jobs back to America

I'm a computer engineer and there are plenty of jobs for me. I'm currently employed and have 2 interviews coming up. If you don't have a job it's probably because you don't actually want one or are not willing to learn a new skillset.

The skill set required to compete for employment in a global labor market consists of being able to live on three or four dollars a day. There aren't enough jobs because capital is flowing to cheap labor overseas. Without capital, there's nothing to work with.

The rules of the global game we're playing right now say that capital (in sufficient quantities to employ everyone who needs work) won't be invested here again until the wage bill is competitive with second and third world labor. Basically that means our economy has to continue to degrade until it becomes competitive and attractive to private investors. Ain't "free trade" grand? Enough capital to employ millions and millions of people won't be invested here again until we become the third world supplier of peasants who work for pennies ourselves.

As a 100% straight commission employee that works 30 feet from her livingroom, has time for Newsvine every day and still clears over six figures...I'd say "yeah". Free trade is pretty grand.

People have a choice, DS. And it's a simple one. They can follow your lead, stymie themselves by over-thinking it and be stuck. Or they can follow my lead, grab their ass by both hands, take risks, quit bitching about the big, bad corporations they work for and take some initiative for their own future rather than relying on someone else to provide it for them.

You're correct when it comes to the lowest skill jobs that no Americans want. You're talking about repetitive manufacturing sweat shop gigs, field labor, meat cutting etc... I can't name one person I know who would actually want to take a job like that and why would they when an entire baby boomer generation threatened their kids with "You better go to school or you will be a burger flipper!" Our entire American culture shuns poor people so why are you surprised that we outsource or hire illegals for these types of jobs? Even if outsourcing was made illegal or hiring illegals was actually enforced no Americans would actually take these jobs.

    Pat,

I put quotations around it to emphasize a use of the word relevant to global investment in the context of the rest of my post.

Can you not see the problem of rogue capital? The livelihood of billions of people depends on them having something to work with, and I mean that literally: the material assets required to operate businesses and produce something to be exchanged with other people operating theirbusinesses. When those assets are under the control of an extremely small minority of the global population who have free license to uproot here, go there, uproot there, go here... it leaves the rest of the world precariously dependent on that minority, and in service to them. The notion that all the millions of unemployed need to do is 'grab their ass by both hands and take risks' is ridiculous when those millions have nothing to take risks with. They aren't the ones controlling the capital.

I'm talking about any job that produces a product that can be shipped and sold globally. All hard commodity production is vulnerable to offshoring, even the skilled tech positions related to that production.

Even if outsourcing was made illegal or hiring illegals was actually enforced no Americans would actually take these jobs.

For the pay that's offered now, which translates into an incorrect market relation between production and price.

I work for a successful private company that designs, produces and sells our own product. The only jobs we have outsourced to China are the production jobs that illegal Mexicans apply for.

even the skilled tech positions related to that production.

No. Chinese quality control is terrible and must be micromanaged to every simple task in order to produce a quality product. We have found it much more beneficial to keep our skilled jobs in the US.

Try paying an honest wage. If simple production labor is absolutely required to produce the product that your company sells, then pay for it accordingly. Outsourcing is a nothing more than a way for businesses to increase profits by operating processes overseas by methods that would get them thrown in jail here, like the wage-slave worker dormitories with suicide nets to catch jumpers in that recent article about Apple.

For now. If a competitor gets it worked out, you'll have no choice but to follow. The lower wage bill wins every time.

Also to add the trends are showing differently. Doing business in China is becoming more and more expensive because of their economy and the quality control is still not improving.

The thing is that she has been tricked into thinking that illegal immigrants are the reason her husband can't find another position as an engineer. Wish I had been there, can't imagine a job set up with the President of the United States as your reference wouldn't get you at least a better job than you currently have.

In retrospect Obama handled this woman's husband not having a job a lot better than Bush handled his "old lady that worked 4 jobs" you know where she said I work 4 jobs to get by to which Bush exclaimed "That's great!"

It is pretty safe to assume she understands the unemployment situation given her husband is out of work for 3yrs with 10 years experience as a semiconductor engineer. Disagree with her speculation all you want, but Obama suggested that her husband should indeed be able to find work in his field so he thinks (or simply claims) that the unemployment situation is not an explanation for the husband's lengthy unemployment.

It is a shame that this woman is considered 'dumb' (by some) for asking a challenging - and clearly not easily answered - question.

What blows my mind is that a certain faction of my party believes that "good strategy" for defeating this idiot is to nominate the guy who lost to the guy who lost to Obama in 2008. Hell, the AFLAC Duck would have a better chance.

Both Obama and Romney don't have a clue what it's like to be at the end of the paycheck and having to face the decision of either paying the utility bill or buy groceries, because they can't afford to do both.

Obama needs to be replaced. His narcissism alone is destructive to the country. But the current leading alternative isn't much better.

The fact that Obama thinks he can talk intelligently about jobs when he's never even held one himself, has got to be the irony of the year.

He has never held a traditional, regular full-time job, bound by hiring practices in a specific industry, bound by the bottom line on a spreadsheet or bound by the basics of economic supply and demand for the services/products in his industry of employment. Likewise, the man has never sat on the other side of the desk, managing an enterprise. He simply is not qualified to speak for the common working man when it comes to employment issues, nor is he connected to the same people because he has zero real world experience with it in any capacity.

Clergymen spend their entire lives "serving others", too. But that doesn't make them knowledgable about the employment market or connected to the people struggling in that area.

Private industry is not the definition of a traditional job. I work in the private sector and am surrounded by idiots everyday that are in charge of millions of dollars. I have also worked in the government and public sectors (military and hospital) and been surrounded by very business oriented people but you will never hear about them because your local business journal is not interested in them. My point is you don't have to work in corporate America to understand basic math. Either the numbers add up or they don't. Obama's policies are no more out of balance then the right's with the exception of Ron Paul who actually understands that the military budget is completely irresponsible and this is coming from an Iraq veteran.
