A top Muslim Brotherhood official has warned that any cuts in U.S. aid to Egypt could affect Cairo’s peace treaty with Israel – the latest sign that Egypt’s emerging political forces intend to call Washington’s bluff over the diplomatic dispute triggered by a crackdown on non-governmental organizations.

Egyptian judges have referred 16 Americans and 27 others linked to NGOs for trial, accusing them of using foreign funds to encourage disruptive protests. Among the targeted NGOs whose assets and funds have been seized are the U.S. government-funded International Republican Institute and National Democratic Institute.

If the Americans were fomenting disruptive protests and such, as they are accused, then they should be tried for their crimes. Being American doesn't make one immune to prosecution in foreign nations. These methods have been used by America for decades to sow the seeds of regime change.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIA_sponsored_regime_change

The United States government has been involved in and assisted in the overthrow of foreign governments (more recently termed regime change) without the overt use of U.S. military force. Often, such operations are tasked to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Many of the governments targeted by the U.S. have been democratically elected, rather than authoritarian governments or military dictatorships. In many cases, the governments toppled were replaced by dictatorships, sometimes installed with assistance by the U.S.

Regime change has been attempted through direct involvement of U.S. operatives, the funding and training of insurgency groups within these countries, anti-regime propaganda campaigns, coup d'états, and other, often illegal, activities usually conducted as operations by the CIA. The U.S. has also accomplished regime change by direct military action, such as following the U.S. invasion of Panama in 1989 and the U.S.-led military invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Some argue that non-transparent United States government agencies working in secret sometimes mislead or do not fully implement the decisions of elected civilian leaders and that this has been an important component of many such operations.[1] See Plausible deniability. Some contend that the US has supported more coups against democracies that it perceived as communist, or becoming communist.[1]

linda

democrats do it all the time.

if they dont get money from the government....they will vote for the other party...so democrats give more and more money to people who have not earned it.

its the same theory as foreign aid.

buy votes. show people you "care"

does it solve the problem...no..it just creates bigger ones...and history has proven this over and over and over again.

money should not be taken from some and given to others...it is the epitome of corruption.

Meanwhile republicans game the tax code so gazillionaires can pay income taxes at non income tax rates while stashing most of their income in non taxed foreign accounts.

Eventually republicans will so emasculate the middle class that the paltry taxes they pay from their minimum wage service jobs won't even cover the interest on our national debt.

there should be no taxes on anyone.

taxes just go to foreign aid and corruption..and war.

J.W. Welch says that like there are no rich democrats using foreign tax havens. Please, quit being a hypocrite and blame BOTH SIDES of the political spectrum, rather than the one you oppose.

Without a strong central government our country would be in chaos right now. A republican governor here, a democrat there, there would soon be a civil war. Taxes are needed to pay for aid programs and improvements and maintenance, but so is a reformation of our tax code, we need to tax the wealthy adequately since they use our bodies and the infrastructure paid for by taxes to make their billions. If they make the most money off this country, they should pay most of the taxes in this country. I am sure that there are rich people on both sides of the political isle using tax havens, they should be investigated and taxed accordingly.

Oh and if any of you advocating that the wealthy paying less taxes is a good thing, I am sure they appreciate your help and will throw you off the cliff last when the time comes.

That only applies to local taxes. Federal taxes go into paying the interest on our National Deficit, which is ever increasing due to new Federal spending. It is a vicious circle where the printing of money creates more debt.

You mean I left out rich dems who hide cash in foreign countries? Horrors!!

If you bothered to notice instead of letting your umbrage get the best of you, you'd have understood my comment in the context of a counterpoint to Marshall's #2.2.

Oddly enough one may equally apply hypocrite (I'm starting to intensely dislike that overused word) to your failure to take him to task for not mentioning repubs using tax havens in his anti dem screed.

    But, your point is taken.

Whether personal income tax is legal or not is irrelevant.

Individuals will still get locked up for not paying and no one will care.

The irony, however, is that, if you are correct about taxes, you and I can get locked up for not paying while corporate persons can hide untaxed billions overseas and get away with it. That doesn't include the billions made overseas that are not taxed by law. What a scam.

Add equal protection under the law to the list of our national myths.

"All Direct taxes must be apportioned." But I guess the founding fathers didn't really mean to use the quantifier "all" when writing it, did they?

Pres Obama helped birth the new order in Egypt and now it is time for him to slap the recalcitrant child.

This cabal of dissidents threatens the U.S. - Pres Obama should laugh in their faces and go get any Americans that are being detained as well as cut off all aid to the ungrateful custodians of the "new" Egypt.

should cut off aid to EVERYONE

we have people at home who need it more.

            and as Ron Paul says.

foreign aid is just taking money from the poor of this country...and giving it to the rich of a poor country.

            Oh look! Extortion!

The federal government should not be redistributing American tax dollars in the form of "aid" to any foreign government as it is. Cut 'em off!
